At 3:30 a.m. in the world’s biggest Ebola treatment center, Daniel Lucey found the outbreak reduced to its essentials: patients lying on mattresses on the floor and vomiting in the dark, visible only by the wavering flashlight beam of a single volunteer doctor.

“I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel,” said Lucey, a physician and professor from Georgetown University who is halfway through a five-week tour in Liberia with Medecins Sans Frontieres, the medical charity known in English as Doctors Without Borders. “The epidemic is still getting worse,” he said by phone between shifts.

Le Pr Jean-François Delfraissy, directeur de l’Institut de microbiologie et maladies infectieuses (IMMI), vient d’être nommé par le Premier ministre Manuel Valls « coordinateur de l’ensemble des opérations internationales et nationales de réponse » à la crise Ebola.
En compagnie d’Yves Lévy, président d’Aviesan et PDG de l’INSERM, il fait le point sur les projets menés par les organismes de recherche français avec notamment la présentation d’un nouveau test diagnostic qui permet la détection d’une charge virale en 15 minutes.

Les organismes publics de recherche sont mobilisés pour répondre à l’épidémie de fièvre Ebola qui sévit en Afrique de l’Ouest, et ils le font savoir. L’Alliance nationale pour les sciences de la vie (Aviesan) qui les regroupe a présenté, mardi 21 octobre, les actions dans lesquelles les chercheurs français se sont engagés. Comme l’a résumé le président d’Aviesan, le Pr Yves Lévy, elles incluent la mise en œuvre d’essais cliniques avec des traitements expérimentaux, l’élaboration d’outils pour les diagnostics de la maladie facilement utilisables sur le terrain ou le développement d’études en sciences humaines et sociales. Avec des premiers résultats attendus pour la fin de l’année pour certains traitements expérimentaux.

C’est une situation inédite qu’a provoquée cette épidémie de fièvre Ebola, que personne n’avait imaginée en Afrique de l’Ouest, avec une intensité et un nombre de victimes sans précédent (plus de 4 500 décès) et une impressionnante dynamique encore ascendante. La recherche doit être menée dans l’urgence, mais en se gardant de bafouer les règles de la démonstration scientifique comme des principes de l’éthique médicale.

Des bénévoles viennent chercher des organes de personnes décédées du virus Ebola, contre une rémunération hebdomadaire de prise de risque 100 $ , le 8 Octobre 2014 à Freetown.

Sierra Leone, juin 1994, les consultants de la Banque mondiale avaient réussi en trois ans à renvoyer plus de 5 000 employés des hôpitaux et à réduire des deux tiers la masse salariale du ministère de la santé, appliquant à la lettre le plan imposé par le Fonds monétaire international (FMI) dans le cadre de l’ajustement structurel. Il s’agissait pour l’essentiel, disait un rapport,« d’employés fantômes ou trop vieux » – des personnels inutiles, sans doute. Au début des années 1990, après une décennie de crise économique, la Sierra Leone était considérée comme un petit « miracle » par le FMI et la Banque mondiale : inflation contrôlée, priorité donnée au paiement de la dette, coupes budgétaires drastiques. Dans le domaine de la santé, le pays était même présenté comme un modèle de « réforme ».

Since early 2014, the international coverage of Africa has been dominated by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Much of that coverage represents the region as helpless and hopeless, a tragic victim of illogical beliefs and dangerous cultural practices. The contributors to this Hot Spots series offer their personal and professional experience in this region as a critical counter-argument. The essays collected here explore the political landscapes that make the state itself both a vector for and victim of this disease (Abramowitz, Ammann, Batty, Ferme, Harman, Nguyen); they write of the social realities of funeral practices, both their limits and their potential for change (Richards); they write of the media coverage of the disease and the complex ways in which information flows in and around the region (McGovern); they write of the way Ebola discourse has entered popular culture (Benton, Tucker), occult narratives (Bolten), and the diasporic imaginary (Sayegh, Wesley); and they write of the complicated ways it links to the region’s history of violence (Schroven, Soderstrom).
